Unzipped

Unzipped is and has been one of my favorite movies since grade school.
It follows fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi as he creates and shows his fall 1994 ready-to-wear collection. I know the world of high fashion doesn't sound that amusing, but this movie is genuinely funny and entertaining. It breaks down a little of that artifice that exists in the fashion world, and you see the subject in true, vulnerable and highly emotional moments. Along with Mizrahi and his staff, you get to him interact with his (hilarious) mother, his celebrity friends (Sandra Berhard, Roseanne, Liza Minnelli, Eartha Kitt, Faye Dunaway, etc), fashion magazine big-wigs (Polly Mellen, Candy Pratts, Andre Leon Talley, etc) , fellow designers and the eras hotter than hot supermodels (Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Shalom Harlow, Yasmeen Ghauri, Niki Taylor, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, etc)
This documentary shows what fashion is supposed to be about, what it is in it's best moments. It is fun and joyful and beautiful and witty. Mizrahi's fall 1994 collection was stunningly beautiful, and I think this documentary is why I have continued to be interested in fashion after the 1990s, when it really hasn't been as fun, whimsy, or inspired as it has been in past decades. I have been looking for what I saw in this collection ever since.
A note about the quality of the caps: These caps actually turned out wonderfully. Much of the film was filmed in this grainy black and white, so this is actually what it is supposed to look like, not a poor quality download or bad set of screen caps. I actually capped it right from the dvd, so it's about as good as you're gonna get.
On a personal note: You might notice about a million and five caps of model Shalom Harlow wearing this particular, sparkly pink mini-dress. I capped images of her in this dress every shot I could because this dress has never left my brain since the first time I saw this movie, shortly after it came out on VHS (I was in 4th or 5th grade). I have been continually haunted and inspired by this dress for almost 20 years.

(fun fact: If you are a fan of the early seasons of Project Runway, you might recognize one of Mizrahi's employees, Robert Best, from Season 2 of PR. He mentioned working for Mizrahi in the first episode of that season and talked shit about him, which did not endear him to me throughout his time on the show. He is much thinner and younger here, but his voice is unmistakable)
